Cider doughnuts are causing some headaches for state health officials.

The state health agency says it is reconsidering a new rule for the farmers’ market on the state Capitol grounds after it received complaints for banning cider doughnuts made by Rees Fruit Farm from the market.

The doughnuts were banned because they aren’t made with whole wheat flour from Kansas, violating a rule that market products must be locally grown or use state ingredients.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said it received complaints about the policy after The Topeka Capital-Journal reported the ban on Wednesday.

Spokeswoman Miranda Myrick says the agency will meet with its partners for the market to discuss the rules. She says the agency does not want to be seen as interfering with competitive markets.
